RE: Construction Project on CP Lands – 829 Hiawatha Line
We are writing to address recent events in our Community with respect to a construction project on CP Lands – 829 Hiawatha Line.
Chief and Council are aware that the nature of this proposed project is controversial and has caused division between a number of our Citizens. We as a Council are taking steps to investigate the project, how it came to begin without going through appropriate channels, and determining what the next steps will be in resolving this situation. We are working with our lawyers, and have been in dialogue with the involved Citizens and their lawyers and contractors as well.
In the meantime, we recognize that the current circumstances have led to disturbing incidents and even direct confrontation between our Citizens in the Community. We wish to remind everybody that we are a strong Nation who stands by our Vision Statement and the Seven Grandfather teachings, and should only deal with each other in a calm and respectful manner, voicing any opinions without violence or harsh words.
We understand that there are varying opinions and we are willing to hear from our Citizens with your views and concerns on either side of this topic. We value the opinions of all our Citizens and will continue to use these opinions to help us make decisions in the collective interests of our Nation.
Thank you for your continuing patience and civility. We will be sure to provide updates on this situation when applicable.
Respectfully and Miigwetch,
HFN Council
